α-硫辛酸是在1951年，美國科學家Reed等首次從豬肝中分離出來的具有活性的天然產物。其生理活性僅局限于R 體，S體基本無活性，但也沒有毒副作用。α-硫辛酸屬于維生素B類藥物。在臨床上α-硫辛酸用于治療神經性糖尿病，缺血再灌注等疾?。涣硗猞?硫辛酸對于肝病、老年癡呆、白內障、心臟病等多種疾病有顯著的治療效果，并寫能有效的抑制HIV-1在細胞中的擴散。
α-硫辛酸是既具水溶性又具脂溶性的淡黃色晶體。目前仍處于右旋硫辛酸取代外消旋硫辛酸的過程之中。全世界的年需求量大概為400噸，并且正持續上漲，但產量僅為200t左右。
現在普遍工業化的生產是用6，8-二氯辛酸乙酯為原料來合成α-硫辛酸，但是這個產品在夏天分子活躍，所以只能再冬天低溫的條件下生產。且污染很大，導致α-硫辛酸一直處于稀缺狀態。
α--硫辛酸別譽為“萬能抗氧化劑”，它可以在體內轉變成二氫硫辛酸（DHLA），硫辛酸和二氫硫辛酸都具有很強的抗氧化性。都能夠有效的清除自由基，預防體內氧化應激的反應。
自由基誘導的氧化損傷長期以來都被認為是導致衰老發生的重要原因之一。所以α-硫辛酸可以通過消除自由基發揮抗衰老作用

Alpha-lipoic acid is an active natural product first isolated from pig liver by Reed et al., an American scientist in 1951. Its physiological activity is only limited to R body, S body is basically inactive, but there is no toxic side effect. Alpha-lipoic acid belongs to the B vitamin class. In clinic, alpha-lipoic acid is used to treat neurodiabetes, ischemia-reperfusion and other diseases.
